Sneaking a Book During Break: Devouring 'Stories of the Sahara'

2024-02-03

Recently, I sneaked some time to “devour” San Mao’s “Stories of the Sahara,” and I feel completely immersed in that vast and free atmosphere, savoring it endlessly. 🤤🤤🤤

Either the body or the soul must always be on the road.

This is so beautifully said. Whether it’s a physical journey or the soul’s wandering through books, both hold equal charm, allowing one to temporarily escape from the trivialities of the present and feel a sense of longing. 😍

Speaking of which, I must thank my classmate—he’s the one who pulled me into this reading rabbit hole. From Yu Hua, “Journey Under the Midnight Sun,” “And Quiet Flows the Don,” to Dostoevsky, Wang Zengqi, “White Deer Plain,” “Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out”… one book after another, it was like opening the door to a new world.

Sometimes I’d see him reading something and just picked it up myself; sometimes I stumbled upon something somewhere, found it interesting, and got it to read. Books like “Educated,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Becoming,” “Ward No. 6”—all sorts of books, consumed one by one.

Some books brought deep insights that still influence me today; others have left only vague fragments of text in my mind. But regardless, those were truly unforgettable times.

I am no longer lost; longing is my only baggage.

The feeling after finishing a book is just like this phrase—heart filled with stories and distant horizons. Now just recalling those plots makes me feel like I’m constantly drooling, haha. 🤤🤤🤤
